According to a study presented at the annual meeting, Sleep 2023, adults with a regular sleep schedule and sufficient sleep duration had a 39% lower risk of mortality in comparison to adults with an irregular sleep schedule and insufficient sleep duration.

The researchers examined data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Sleep Study, which included 1,759 people who were tracked for an average of seven years. Seven days of wrist actigraphy data were used to classify sleep regularity and duration. There were 176 deaths during the study period.

Lead author, Dr. Joon Chung, who has a doctorate in sociology and is a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School and in the division of sleep and circadian disorders at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, stated that the results of the study emphasized the benefits of expanding the public conversation on getting a good nights sleep.

Adequate sleep duration, appropriate timing, good quality, regularity, and the absence of sleep disruptions or disorders are all required for healthy sleep. To achieve optimal health, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society suggest that individuals sleep 7 or more hours every night regularly.
